You Just Have to Care

Interview with Scott Williams

Scott Williams is a software engineer at Google. Married, in his thirties, he grew up in a family that was interested in Eastern spirituality, and he started reading about Zen as a teenager. After moving to California in 2010, he found a Sangha and a teacher. “My reading in high school indicated that in order to do this Zen thing seriously, you need a teacher and a Sangha. Those were two things I didn’t have access to growing up in a small town in Colorado. Without them, it’s difficult to practice on your own,” Scott said.

He finds meditation especially useful when things get stressful at work. He sees many people in Silicon Valley finding relief practicing mindfulness, even those who aren’t really focused on spiritual development. “It is like an appetizer for the spiritual development that might come for them later, maybe in another lifetime. I definitely see it ease their anxiety.”
